Donald Shields Bindseil December 1, 1927- April 8, 2019 Donald S. (Don) Bindseil, age 91, of Apache Junction, AZ died April 8, 2019 at the Eden Adult Care Center in Mesa, AZ. Don was born in Ogden, IA to Louis and Ethel Bindseil. He graduated from East High School in Des Moines, IA in 1945. He served 22 months in the U.S. Navy Air Corps in WWII as a machinist.

He married Shirlee Evelyn Anderson December 5, 1948. In 1951, he was employed by Northern Natural Gas Company (which later became Enron Co.) at Ogden, IA. In 1954, he was the first person to move his family to Waterloo, IA when northern Iowa first received natural gas. He later was transferred to Des Moines, IA and Liberal, KS.

While in Liberal, he was on the Board of Directors for the Liberal Bee Jays – a semi-pro baseball team; Liberal Pancake Days, the Seward County Red Cross, and Junior Achievement. He retired while in Liberal and traveled with Shirlee for 22 years in their motorhome seeing all 50 states. After Shirlee passed in 2001, he continued traveling seeing parts of Europe, Asia, South America, Mexico, and Canada.

During his motorhome days, he was on the Board of Directors of the Family Motor Coach Association and attended many rallies and Full-timers events. After moving to Dolce Vita, Apache Junction, AZ, in 2012, he became a member of the Veterans Association.

In 2016, he was able to participate in Honor Flight Arizona, traveling to Washington, D.C., escorted by his son, to see the monuments. It was the highlight trip of all his travels. He couldn’t stop talking about this experience.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Ethel, wife, Shirlee, sister and brother -in-law, Merle and Betty Sherbring, and daughter Catherine (Cathy) Bindseil. He is survived by children Cynthia Murphy (Denis), Surprise, AZ; Cheryl Morrow, Apache Junction, AZ; Steven Bindseil (Victoria), Kansas City, MO; and Carolyn Acton, Columbia, MO. Also, seven grandchildren, three step grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and eight step great-grandchildren, and three step great- great-grandchildren.
